Lt. Col. Sidney M. Jacobs
POCATELLO - Sidney Monta Jacobs of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008.
Sidney was born in Burley, Idaho, on November 26, 1920, as the only child of Sarah Margaret (Hitt) and Howard Sven Jacobs. Sidney graduated from Malta High School in 1938. He often spent his summers tending sheep on the family's own "Bolly Mountain" in Sublet, Idaho.
After graduation, Sid joined the Merchant Marines, then joined the Navy during World War II and served in the Aleutian Islands and South Pacific.
He met and married Dorothy Evelyn Pellin in 1944, while in Youngstown, Ohio.
Upon release from the Navy in 1945, Sid attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he receive degrees in radio engineering, math and physics. At graduation in 1949, he was tendered a regular commission as second lieutenant in the Air Force.
During the next 26 years, Sidney was stationed around the U.S. and England, Germany, France, and was later assigned to Japan, where he served as the deputy base commander. After seeing much of the world and the U.S., he retired as lieutenant colonel from the Air Force and moved to Pocatello in 1973.
During the next 10 years he worked briefly at Highland High School as a math teacher, then took a job with the State of Idaho Insurance Fund. Sidney completely retired in 1985. He enjoyed his time by tending to his log home and 3 1/2 acres. He loved to read, tinker with model trains and went fishing and camping often. In his later years his intuitions for ranching returned as he irrigated, farmed, raised cattle and boarded horses on his property in Pocatello.
Sid and his wife, Dorothy, had four children, Dennis Howard Jacobs and his family reside in Sandy, Utah, Sandra Joan (Jacobs) Sullivan lives in Denver, Colorado with her family, Julie Anne Jacobs lives and works for the state in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and his youngest daughter, Barbara Diane Jacobs, who just recently moved back to Pocatello from living in Spokane, Washington for the past 17 years.
Sidney, "Col. Jake" Jacobs was a young, handsome and witty Idaho cowboy who became a classy, intelligent and proud officer in the Air Force of the country he loved.
Col. Jake will be forever respected and dearly loved by all those who knew him. He was truly the real "officer and gentleman."
Viewing will be today (Friday, March 28), from 7 to 9 p.m. at Downard Funeral Home in Pocatello. Military graveside service will be Saturday March 29 at 1 p.m. at the Malta Cemetery in Malta, Idaho. Family requests no flowers, please.
